Dissemination of research on the agenda

Recently, researchers from the entire Emerge alliance gathered in Hamar to take part in an intensive course on the dissemination of scientific research.

The course was organised by Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (INN University) from 10 to 14 June.

The lecturers who came to Hamar were from the University of Rennes 2 (UR2, France), the University of Matej Bel (UMB, Slovakia) and INN University (Norway). Students from five EMERGE universities participated in the course (INN University, European University Flensburg, University of Limerick, Matej Bel University and Neapolis University).

The course focuses on open access (UR2 and INN), outreach (INN) and academic integrity (UMB).

Combined digital and physical programme

In the first part of the programme, the students participated in a digital gathering in April, which included three virtual meetings where they received the necessary theoretical content to work on tasks that were further developed during the physical gathering in Hamar. Among other things, there was active learning of real-case analysis related to Open Access and academic integrity.

Additionally, the students presented their research in various ways (film, poster, presentation, podcast) and received feedback from the other participants as well as from the university's communication advisors, Erlend Moe and Ole Martin Ringlund, who have extensive experience as journalists and in communicating scientific research.

Exchanged experiences

The Open Access component was taught by Cecile Sebban and Johanna Sauvage from UR2, and Inger Beate Nylund and Ellen Nierenberg from INN. This was also a good opportunity for open access specialists from two of the Emerge institutions to sit together and exchange experiences in all aspects related to Open Access. The third component of academic integrity was taught by Dr. Andrea Klimkova and Dr. Daniela Kovacova from UMB.

Satisfied students

The week in Hamar ended with a guided visit to Domkirkeodden, a historical landmark in the city.

The students expressed that they were satisfied with the organisation of this course, and that it was a good experience, educational and that they greatly benefited from getting to know students and professors from other universities, as well as exchanging experiences with common challenges. We really hope that we have strengthened these students' scientific research journey.

Pilot project

The course is a pilot project in Emerge for PhDs in generic skills with a focus on dissemination, open access and academic ethics and integrity.

The ALB faculty at INN organises courses in generic skills for PhD students under the auspices of the Emerge University alliance. The main theme is communication of scientific research and modules focus on dissemination, open access and ethics.

Research training and career paths for researchers have developed significantly over the past 20 years. This has led to an increased awareness in academia of the need to focus on generic skills (transferable skills) in research training. Nevertheless, there are still relatively few academic institutions that offer courses in generic skills, and even fewer that integrate them into systematic career programmes.

Facts about Emerge

  • Emerge stands for ‘Empowering the Margins of Europe through Regional and Global Engagement’. Read nore about EMERGE.
  • Nine institutions within higher education collaborate in networks.
  • Institutions from Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Slovakia, Cyprus, Greece and Norway participate in the network.
  • The partners in Emerge wish to apply for status as a European university alliance through the European Universities Initiative (EUI) in Erasmus+.
  • EUI status means, among other things, that the participants in the alliance must have a joint long-term strategy for education that strengthens the link between education, research and innovation.
