What is a student assistant and a learning assistant?

As a student assistant or learning assistant, you are employed by the university in a part-time position related to a specific course within a particular study programme. Responsibilities may vary between courses and programmes.

We differentiate between student assistants and learning assistants:

Student assistants typically handle routine and simple tasks related to the teaching environment, such as monitoring attendance, assisting with chat monitoring and providing basic technical support and connection help.

Learning assistants handle tasks requiring a greater degree of independence. This may include organising and leading academic activities like study groups, providing basic academic guidance and facilitating initiatives related to social well-being and inclusion.

Student and learning assistants are not a replacement for regular teaching but serve as a complement to it. Learning assistants primarily guide students academically and help foster a productive study environment.

Examples of tasks for student assistants and learning assistant

  • Organising and following up on study groups
  • Working with assignment materials, articles, or other relevant literature
  • Arranging workshops and seminars, such as exam workshops or writing clinics
  • Practical skills training in relevant subjects
  • Managing group work in practice sessions
  • Supporting laboratory work
  • Providing technical assistance with digital tools and audio Equipment

Tasks may vary, and faculties and individual study programmes decide the specific responsibilities. The role involves supporting students at lower academic levels.

Qualifications

For a student assistant or learning assistant position, you must be a student at INN, have progressed sufficiently in your studies, and have experience in the subject area you will be working with.

Learning assistants must have previously taken the course themselves.

Required qualifications are adjusted based on the needs of each study programme and course.
