EndNote and Word

The connection between EndNote and Word allows you to insert citations and create bibliographies in your Word-documents.

Endnote in Word: Cite while you write

After installing EndNote, a tab will appear in Word giving you access to all the EndNote-functions in Word

Insert citation

  1. Place marker where you wish to insert a citation
  2. Go to Insert Citation
  3. Use the search field to find the correct reference from your library
  4. Click Insert

Edit citations

When using EndNote in Word it is important to not edit citations in text or references in the bibliography manually. The following is the correct approach:

  1. Click on the citation you wish to edit
  2. Go to Edit & Manage Citation(s)
  3. Make the desired changes, like:
  4. Adding text before or after the citation using the prefix or suffix fields
  5. Adding page numbers to a citation using the field for pages
  6. Change how a citation is displayed by choosing the field for format

Remove citations

To remove citations inserted in Word with EndNote we strongly advice against deleting them manually by delete/backspace. Use the following approach to remove unwanted citations:

  1. Click on the citation you wish to remove
  2. Go to Edit & Manage Citation(s)
  3. Remove the citation(s) from the menu on each citation
