Research Programme in AI & VR/AR at INN University

Exploring the use of advanced digital techniques in research is central in the research programme about AI & VR/AR.

The research programme supports INN University's ambition to promote outstanding research, through collaboration across faculties and sharing experiences with the use of new digital techniques in research.

AI & VR/AR is becoming increasingly important in research and education, in the same way as in society in general. It is used in academia, and in the public and private sector, as a tool to acquire new knowledge and create innovation. A Google Scholar search for "artificial intelligence" along with "management", "healthcare" or "economics" shows respectively more than 90,000, 40,000 and 50,000 hits.

New opportunities

Open Science and FAIR data often require advanced digital technologies. They provide a framework and new opportunities for research and innovation and are present in most disciplines today. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are seen as a significant competitive advantage in many sectors, especially in the analysis and implementation of Big Data.

There is also an increasing expectation to include knowledge and experience about these topics in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and 3D applications have been used for a long time in training and visualisation.

Collaboration across faculties

In 2022, funds were announced for PhD projects, including expenses, where at least two faculties at INN University collaborate. The projects were to be based on a research question, include advanced digital techniques, and thereby be able to contribute to increasing the overall digital competence at INN University. The funds were announced by the university centrally, and the projects could apply for up to 3 million Norwegian kroner each. Four projects were awarded and are well underway with their work.

These are the projects in the programme

Innovating Teacher Education with new Learning Technologies (InnTELT)
Project leader: Karen Parish, Faculty of Education. Collaborating partner is the Faculty of Audiovisual Media and Creative Technologies.

AMR-Diag: Novel technological solutions for rapid diagnostics of infection& AMR
Project leader: Rafi Ahmad, Faculty of applied ecology, agricultural sciences and biotechnology. Collaborating partners are the Inland School of Business and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences.

A portal to new worlds of sound: Artistic research into 3D audio in extended reality (XR)
Project leader: Trond Lossius, The Norwegian Film School. Collaborating partner is the Faculty of Audiovisual Media and Creative Technologies.

Applying Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology to Systematic Interprofessional Emergency Response and Decision-Making Training
Project leader: Inger Lund-Kordahl, Inland School of Business and Social Sciences. Collaborating partner is the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences.

Events

Under the umbrella of the programme, we organise joint seminars to share experiences between the projects and elsewhere in the organisation.

Open seminar on research ethics, 26th April 2024.
