Arrival to Norway

There are different ways of arriving in Norway. Be aware of the specific information regarding your transportation method(s) choice.

We have listed some information that is of particular importance. View the information below and check Visit Norway's webpage for additional tips (external link).

Arrival by buss(es)

If you plan to travel with the VY bus from the airport or Oslo Central Station (Sentralstasjon), purchase a ticket through the VY webpage (external link) or the "VY" app. When travelling with other buses from the airport or the central station, you can buy a ticket using the ENTUR app.

Upon arrival in the city where you will stay during your exchange, you can use ENTUR to purchase various ticket options, such as a single ticket, 24-hour ticket, 7-day ticket, 30-day ticket, 180-day ticket and 365-day ticket. Prices vary according to age (under 20, 20-29, and 30+) and zones. Purchase a physical bus card and add the bus ticket of your choice if you do not wish to/cannot use the app. For some campuses, students do not need to take the bus to get to campus and the city.

If you take a bus from abroad, you must switch buses at the Oslo Central Station (Sentralstasjon).

Arrival by car

Arriving by car ferry from Denmark, Great Britain or Germany is possible. For more information on how to travel to Norway by ferry, view Visit Norway's webpage (external link).

Familiarize yourself with the Norwegian traffic rules (external link) before starting your journey to Norway.

Parking at a student dorm (SINN)

Please be aware that there might be a parking fee at the SINN student dorm. View the "Enclosure to the tenancy agreement" for further information on the monthly price. To register your car, view the information for your student dorm on SINN's webpage (external link). If you cannot find the information there, contact SINN directly.

Parking at the INN University campuses

There might be a parking fee at your campus of study. For further information, view the webpage on parking at INN University. Then, register your car through the Apcoa Flow webpage and activate your profile in the app (afterwards). Instructions are stated in the link above. You need access to your INN student account (student number and password) to activate your profile.

Road toll

All drivers in Norway are required to pay road tolls. There are no manual booths. Therefore, a transponder for the toll stations is highly recommended to make it easier for you to use the automatic payment on bridges, ferries, and toll roads. The recommended companies offering transponders for Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark & Sweden) are:

  • Øresund pay can be used in Scandinavia (external link).
  • Autopass can only be used in Norway (external link).
  • Epass24 can only be used in Norway and Sweden (external link).

Summer/winter tyres

Specific rules apply to tyres during different seasons. Remember to check the quality of your summer/winter tyres before starting your journey. For further information, view the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's web page (external link).

Arrival by train(s)

Students planning to travel by train in Norway should download the app "VY". Register your credit/debit card in the app before arrival. Purchase a ticket at the train station (ticket machine) or on the train (an additional fee might apply) if you cannot use the app. If you take a train from abroad, you must switch trains at the Oslo Central Station (Sentralstasjon).

  • Take the VY RE10 train from Oslo S (central station) / Oslo Gardermoen airport. It does not require a seating reservation and has lots of room for your luggage. Taking the SJ F6 train requires a seating reservation and provides less room for luggage. Using a VY ticket on an SJ train and vice versa is impossible.
  • If you arrive at TORP Sandefjord Airport, take the VY RE11 train to Oslo S and transfer to the RE10 train/SJ train. Be aware of the transfer time in Oslo S.
  • Remember to exit the RE10 / SJ train at Hamar or Lillehammer station, depending on where you plan to go. You must transfer to the SJ train in Hamar to Elverum, Evenstad, and Rena. Be aware of the transfer time.
When to purchase train ticket(s)

You should wait to purchase your train ticket until you have arrived in Norway due to flight delays or other delays that might cause you to miss your train. Travelling between/through different time zones on your way to Norway may affect the ticket (in the app). But if you decide to purchase a ticket, be aware of the difference between the LOW FARE and the TOTAL FLEXIBILITY options.

  • If you purchase the "Low fare" option, you cannot modify your train ticket after 2 hours. The "total flexibility" option allows you to alter and refund your ticket until departure, but it is more expensive.

Arrival by plane(s)

Look into different airlines or other companies before travelling to Norway. Also, make sure to check the luggage regulations and restrictions. For detailed info about continuing your travel from an Airport with trains and busses, read the "Arrival by train(s)/busses" underneath.

OSLO Gardermoen Airport or TORP Sandefjord Airport?

Two airports will be relevant for your arrival in Norway. The recommended airport for arrival is Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OLS).

  • Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL) – You can find direct trains from Gardermoen to Hamar (approx. 40-50 minutes) and Lillehammer (approx. 1 hour and 40 minutes). If you are travelling to Elverum or Evenstad, check the corresponding trains from Hamar.
  • TORP Sandefjord Airport – we do not recommend arriving at Torp Airport unless that is your best option.
    • Travelling from this airport takes extra time by train, such as from Torp to Hamar (approximately 3 hours) and Lillehammer (approximately 4 hours). If you are travelling to Elverum or Evenstad, check the corresponding trains from Hamar.

Day of arrival

Please be aware that the type of arrival service varies from campus to campus. The International Office at each campus will provide additional detailed information to accepted students, but students cannot choose an option themselves.

Keep the International Office updated if you have any changes to your planned arrival.

Buddy pick-up

This service is offered in Campus Elverum, Campus Evenstad and Campus Hamar.

Find your way to your campus city from the airport or Oslo central station. We do not offer airport pick-up. Your assigned Buddy will pick you up at the Train station upon arrival. Keep in touch with your Buddy on the day of arrival so they know if you will be delayed. They will take you from the train station to your accommodation and inform you about specific accommodation rules (if you rent a SINN dorm).

If you arrive by car, schedule the meeting at your accommodation. There is no need to meet up at the Train Station.

Self-serving arrival

This service is only offered in Campus Lillehammer.

Find your way to Lillehammer from the airport or Oslo Central Station. We do not offer airport pick-up. The International Office will meet students at the train station during the "Arrival days" with the SINN housing key. Students will receive documents well before arrival explaining how to purchase bus tickets and travel to their dorm (SINN). The "Arrival days" will be announced well in advance.

Please be aware of the following:

  • Students arriving by car must visit the train station to pick up their key (SINN accommodation).
  • Students renting private accommodation (not through SINN) must schedule a key pick-up directly with their landlord.
  • Arrival outside the recommended hours/dates must be scheduled with the International Office. It is not guaranteed that the key can be picked up upon arrival in such cases.

Further information will be provided to accepted students.
