  An approach for creating structured Open Sound Control (OSC) messages by separating the addressing of node values and node properties is suggested. This includes a method for querying values and properties. As a result, it is possible to address complex nodes as classes inside of more complex tree structures using an OSC namespace. This is particularly useful for creating flexible communication in modular systems. A prototype implementation is presented and discussed.

  Fundamental to the development of musical or artistic creative work is the ability to transform raw materials. This ability implies the facility to master many facets of the material, and to shape it with plasticity. Computer music environments typically provide points of control to manipulate material by supplying parameters with controllable values. This capability to control the values of parameters is inadequate for many artistic endeavors, and does not reflect the analogous tools and methods of artists working with physical materials. Rather than viewing parameters in computer-based systems as single points of control, the authors posit that parameters must become more multifaceted and dynamic in order to serve the needs of artists. The authors propose an expanded notion of how to work with parameters in computer-centric environments for time-based art. A proposed partial solution to this problem is to give parameters additional properties that define their behavior. An example implementation of these ideas is presented in Jamoma.

  Performance and exhibition with the group Pixels.Frames.Beats.Drones. Pixels.Frames.Beats.Drones met for an artist-in-residency at Surnadal Billag in the autumn of 2021 and developed a joint installation/performance around resonance, vibration, circuits, reuse, sound-related phenomena, and exploration of available material. The work resulted in an exhibition where the artists also made several performances daily. This work is now being further developed into a larger coherent performance. The work has characteristics that are also well suited as an exhibition, through scenographic elements being created and emerging in performance, and these form a space that remains and is made available for the audience to explore afterwards. The project revolves around material exploration of feedback systems. Systems that are chaotic and have a rich potential for organic processes, where the practitioners can influence key moments, but at the same time do not control all the details of how the material takes shape. Processes, which have close analogies in nature, “tipping points” in environmental disasters, weather systems, societal , psychological, political and social processes – are systems we find everywhere. Materially speaking, the starting point is feedback systems in sound, where the group have developed rich interaction models, and combined these with known techniques for how sound can affect matter (cymatics *). By using a number of different powders and granular substances that can be affected by sound vibrations in different ways: Salt, flour, spices, paint pigment, coal, grains, pebbles and leaves, forming the basis for a visual expression that may look like stop-motion animation, but it appears “live” in the physical space. One can associate geological forms, dramatic mountain and volcanic formations, where larger objects can assume the role of “characters” with empathetic attraction.

  After a year of 12 immersive residencies, the ViViFiCAR collective exhibition is now presented in Norway, with a selection of the works developed by 12 artists in 4 low-density municipalities in the Douro: Alijó (Alexandra Delmar, André Tribbensee, Patrícia Geraldes), Lamego (Hasan Daraghmeh, João Pedro Fonseca, Violeta Moura), Mêda (Maria Lusitano, Raquel Schefer, Trond Lossius) and Tower of Moncorvo (Fábio Cunha, Ine Harrang, José Pires).   The term soundscape is attributed to Canadian composer, writer, and environmentalist Murray Shafer. The notion is deeply anchored in the sound technologies that have made particular forms of listening possible - such as high fidelity and stereophony -, as well as in concerns that, since the 1970s, have led to thinking about the effects of sound environments on the living beings (plants, animals, and humans) which inhabit them. The concept broadly defines the sound combination that composes an immersive environment, contemplating the natural (biophony) and the artificial (anthropophony) acoustic environments. It also references the way in which the listener perceives and communicates about what they hear. The idea of soundscape demonstrates that our everyday sound experience is not immobile and planned, but that our relationship with sound is multidimensional, comprising the environment which surrounds us. Trond Lossius' projects investigate sound, place and space, using sound spatialization and multi-channel audio as an invisible, temporal sculptural medium in works that engage the local. He is dedicated to field recording soundscapes, using surround microphones, and considers these recordings capture a sense of place, in addition to sound. Trond Lossius' encounters with the community are mirrored in the installation Lento o Tempo Muda em Poço do Canto, which consists of four monitors with simultaneous viewing videos, spatialized sound, and clusters of white plinths of various sizes. The videos record short sequences of small, slow movements of everyday life in Poço do Canto, including elements of natural and built environments. Human presence is only suggested, glimpsed from a distance or in a brief moment of passage in front of the camera: drivers of cars passing on the road, the shadow of a person handling bottles, the hand that turns on a machine. Traces of human activity or ruins are interspersed with natural landscapes and details of local flora: shadows waving on the ground, tree branches and leaves in the wind, bottles sliding along a bottling line, dry vegetation, spider webs, vines and hills, sales signs, gently stirring water, traces of a party, etc. These images record the slow stillness of everyday life lived by local inhabitants, both human and non-human. The gentle movement of the video installation images is reinforced by the immersive soundscape that runs through the exhibition space, celebrating the stillness of Poço do Canto and the community that inhabits or returns to it.

  Siden 2014 har Trond Lossius og Jeremy Welsh arbeidet sammen med prosjektet The Atmospherics, som har vært presentert i en rekke utstillinger, festivaler og visninger. Tidligere versjoner har vært basert på feltopptak fra Vestlandet, Trøndelag og Lofoten. Til installasjonen ved Ringebu prestegard har det blitt gjort opptak i området rundt Gudbrandsdalen, og dette blir første gang metodene i prosjektet møter landskap og omgivelser fra denne delen av Norge.

  jeg TENKTE ikke at jeg skulle helle LEIRE på GULVET for å lage en god LYD er en bok som oppsummerer et tre år langt prosjekt ved Senter for keramisk kunst på Ringebu Prestegard. Prosjektrommet er et fjøs. Vinduene er vestvendte med storslagen utsikt over Gudbrandsdalslågen. Arbeidet foregikk delvis åpent for publikum og genererte mange undersøkelser, eksperimenter og uforutsigbare resultater. Ofte var jeg alene. Med skisseblokk, videokamera, fotografiapparat og skrivemaskin registrerte jeg det jeg så og opplevde. Det jeg hørte, det jeg snakket med andre om og det andre fortalte meg. I kortere perioder inviterte jeg inn en rekke kollegaer som deltok i eksperimentet gjennom lyd, musikk, foto og tekst. Prosjektet, som forøvrig tok utgangspunkt i 37 forlatte søyler, bygget av ti tonn leire, var i konstant transformasjon og samtidig sterkt knyttet til stedet. Hvorfor og hvordan kan noe slikt fanges i et bokformat?

Verket er presentert gjennom en nettside og en publikasjon med tekst, bilder og kart. Lydkunstner Trond Lossius fra Den Norske Filmskole og Griegakadmiet, har besøkt verket, og samtaler med Huizing om hvordan lyd kan utforske sted, bygninger og hverdagsliv. Når bygninger eldes, kan de bli ulydige. Nye beboere flytter inn, materialer ruster og nabolaget forandrer seg. Kan dette ulydige utforskes ved lyd? I to år har en gruppe forskere på prosjektet Disobedient Buildings ved Universitetet i Oxford undersøkt hvordan folk i dag opplever å bo i boligblokker som eldes. Som et samarbeid mellom forskerne og Van Etten Gallery har lydkunstner Jiska Huizing fått tilgang til innsamlet materiale og respondert på dette gjennom et stedsspesifikt lydverk.   The Ambisonic Toolkit (ATK) brings together a number of classic and novel tools for the artist working with Ambisonic surround sound. The toolset is intended to be both ergonomic and comprehensive, framed so that the user is enabled to ‘think Ambisonic’. The Ambisonic Toolkit addresses the holistic problem of creatively controlling a complete soundfield, facilitating spatial composition beyond simple placement of sounds in a sound-scene. The artist is empowered to address the impression and imaging of a soundfield – taking advantage of the native soundfield-kernel paradigm the Ambisonic technique presents. The Ambisonic Toolkit for Reaper is free software, and is published under the LGPLv3 free software license. --- ATK for Reaper v.1.0.0 beta 11 is a maintenance release fixing some issues in order to ensure compatibility with Reaper v. 6.38.

  HD-video, 40:42 min. The Atmospherics er en videreføring av forskningsprosjektet Re:place, som ble gjennomført på Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen i 2012–2013. Prosjektet undersøker temaet «sted» gjennom ulike medier og kunstpraksiser. Innspillingen har hovedsakelig funnet sted på Vestlandet, i Trøndelag og Lofoten. Bilder og lyd fra naturlandskap og bymiljø kombineres i prosjektet og er ikke er ment som en naturalistisk representasjon av et gitt sted, men en syntese av elementer som hører til ulike steder. Stedet som oppleves i verket er dermed syntetisk – det eksisterer kun i kunstverket.

  Danced Work in Progress er en danseforestilling som fornyer seg for hver oppsetning. Den baserer seg på materiale fra den livslange danseerfaringen til dansere med ulik bakgrunn. Som en visuell fenomenologi eller en nærværets fragmenterte encyklopedi, viser den mangfold i individuelle veivalg og hvordan de alle bidrar til det vi kaller samtidsdans i dag. Det koreografiske materialet består av sitater fra dansernes profesjonelle bakgrunn i form av bevegelsesfraser på et minutt hver. Danserne begynner med å repetere sine sitater i loop, like mange ganger som det er dansere på scenen. Denne regelen vil sørge for at publikum får sett hvert sitat i sin helhet. I løp av forestillingen vil de med gjevne mellomrom kopiere hverandres bevegelsesfraser i et forsøk på samklang. Det synlige resultatet vil bli et kaos av forskjellige epoker og bakgrunner og vil tidvis komme sammen i forhandlet enighet. Det du vil se på scenen er ikke et resultat av koreografens kreative gest. De enkle reglene overrekker koreografien til utøverne selv og deres arsenal. Det du vil få se er summen av de erfaringene og den utøvende kunnskapen til danserne i forestillingen. Det dreier seg altså om en fortolkningsbasert koreografi. Fortolkning refererer i de utøvende kunster til «spill» og i teori til «forståelse». Det du vil få se er hvordan dansernes utøvererfaring preger deres måte å lese det som skjer på scenen, og måten de fortolker den situasjonen de til enhver tid befinner seg i. Lydbildet er også basert eller bygget på sitater, sitater fra lyden og musikken som ble brukt i de forskjellige produksjonene som denne forestillingen bygger på. Og hver av dansernes ti sitater vil tilsvare ti lydklipp som spilles når de danser. Konsept og organisering: Andrea Spreafico. • Habte, Mahlet Ogbe & Lossius, Trond (2021). Kunstnersamtale om Mahlet Ogbe Habte's utstilling "Screaming Blood". Vis sammendrag

  Om den etiopiske komponisten Saint Yared (505-571 e.Kr.) vart det sagt at han fekk den musikalske innsikta si gjennom eit møte med tre fuglar, som inspirerte han til å skapa tre ulike modale skalaer. Gjennom studiar av Saint Yared, og særleg hymnen «Seatat» frå «dei dødes songar» (Mewasit), ønskjer Mahlet Ogbe Habte å nytta lyd for å formidla utan å måtta gå omvegen via intellektet. Sjølv om musikk berre er ein konstellasjon av lydbølgjer, kan han gi oss emosjonelle erfaringar og setja oss i ulike sinnstilstandar på ein annan måte enn språkleg og visuell kommunikasjon. I Habtes lydinstallasjonar følgjer vi mennesket Yared gjennom livsløpet hans, frå fødselsaugneblinken, via ein vanskeleg oppvekst, og til tida då han mottok sin heilage innsikt. Ved å fokusera på Yared sine tidlege år, ønskjer Habte ei audmjuk tilnærming til meisteren, eit utgangspunkt der det kan vera mogleg å koma nærare mennesket Yared, og dermed forstå han betre. Arbeida dreier seg om håp, like mykje som om tap og sorg. Habte har levd tett på sorgprosessar i heimlandet sitt, Eritrea, og målet hennar er å setja publikum i stand til å ta inn over seg kompleksiteten i dei ulike lidingshistoriene som følgjer av dei kontemporære krisene i dag. Men «Seatat» er ikkje ein klagesong, tvert imot er det ein «chant» som skal sørgja for vår udødelege sjels velvære. Måten vi som menneske uttrykkjer sorg på, varierer frå kultur til kultur, men smerta vi føler når vi går gjennom ein sorgprosess, har ein felles, tidlaus kvalitet, som går på tvers av barrierar som etnisk tilknyting, språk og hudfarge. Det er likevel ikkje noko moraliserande over Habtes prosjekt. Heller kanskje ein vennleg dult, eit nikk i retning av ein felles grunn som vi som menneske har tilgang på, men som vi ikkje nyttar oss tilstrekkeleg av, eller har gløymt eksisterer. Utstillinga «Screaming Blood» består av fleire lydarbeid, som supplerast av fysiske installasjonar, samt ei gruppe måleri. Mens lyden frå «Dei dødes songar» kan knytast opp mot ei universell tapskjensle, kan dei fargerike måleria og installasjonen til samanlikning stå fram som oppmuntrande og håpefulle. Dei er skapte med utgangspunkt i funne materiale som eller ville blitt kasta. Dei fargerike flatene gir assosiasjonar til kart og havoverflater, og i dette anar vi at forflytting eller endring kan skje. Vi ser ein venleik i det forgjengelege, men også ein parallell til dei stendig fleire namnlause som årleg blir borte i havet, på jakt etter eit betre liv. Kunstnar og filmskapar Mahlet Ogbe Habte er utdanna ved Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen (no KMD) og ved Met Film School i London. Ho er fødd og oppvaksen i Eritrea, men bur og arbeider i dag i Noreg. Ho har deltatt i ei rekkje nasjonale og internasjonale utstillingar og andre kunstprosjekt. Lydarbeida er laga i samarbeid med komponist Fridtjof Wesseltoft.

  Gjennom et toårig forløp 2020-2021 arbeider Katrine Køster Holst alene og sammen med inviterte kollegaer med et stedspesifikt prosjekt i Fjøset ved Ringebu Prestegård. Arbeidsprosessene forholder seg til det stedsspesifikke rundt Fjøseet og omgivelsene ved Gudbrandsdalen. Her undersøkes respons gjennom arbeidet med leire, vann, lyd, musikk, foto, dans og tekst, og gjennom metoder som registrering og improvisasjon, drives prosjektet fram en stadig transformasjon. Et tema for prosjektet er hvordan ulike «handlingsregler» påvirker komposisjon, dialog, brudd og re-organisering av mening. Trond Lossius bidrar til Holst sin installasjon sommeren 2021 med et 4-kanal lydarbeid basert på feltopptak fra Ringebu.

  Danced Work in Progress er en danseforestilling som fornyer seg for hver oppsetning. Den baserer seg på materiale fra den livslange danseerfaringen til dansere med ulik bakgrunn. Som en visuell fenomenologi eller en nærværets fragmenterte encyklopedi, viser den mangfold i individuelle veivalg og hvordan de alle bidrar til det vi kaller samtidsdans i dag. Det koreografiske materialet består av sitater fra dansernes profesjonelle bakgrunn i form av bevegelsesfraser på et minutt hver. Danserne begynner med å repetere sine sitater i loop, like mange ganger som det er dansere på scenen. Denne regelen vil sørge for at publikum får sett hvert sitat i sin helhet. I løp av forestillingen vil de med gjevne mellomrom kopiere hverandres bevegelsesfraser i et forsøk på samklang. Det synlige resultatet vil bli et kaos av forskjellige epoker og bakgrunner og vil tidvis komme sammen i forhandlet enighet. Det du vil se på scenen er ikke et resultat av koreografens kreative gest. De enkle reglene overrekker koreografien til utøverne selv og deres arsenal. Det du vil få se er summen av de erfaringene og den utøvende kunnskapen til danserne i forestillingen. Det dreier seg altså om en fortolkningsbasert koreografi. Fortolkning refererer i de utøvende kunster til«spill» og i teori til «forståelse». Det du vil få se er hvordan dansernes utøvererfaring preger deres måte å lese det som skjer på scenen, og måten de fortolker den situasjonen de til enhver tid befinner seg i. Lydbildet er også basert eller bygget på sitater, sitater fra lyden og musikken som ble brukt i de forskjellige produksjonene som denne forestillingen bygger på.   With duets with bears to the shouts of voices ringing in the halls, the words of South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, and a world premiere from acclaimed composer George Lewis, Borealis swings open the doors between the Natural History Museum and the University Aula in Bergen to celebrate the opening of the festival. Starting in the newly renovated Natural History Museum we’ll hear improvised musical conversations with the newly housed animals by an ensemble of performers from the Grieg Academy, Dyp sang, hvalens kulturlyder – a sound installation in the Whale Room by Bjarne Kvinnsland, Trond Lossius and David Rothenberg – and a musical intervention from F*Choir, bringing their own brand of feminist punk choir to the staircases and open spaces of the museum. Away from the immaculate taxidermy, in the grand setting of the University Aula, British vocalist and composer Elaine Mitchener will celebrate the music of American composer George Lewis, alongside the Norwegian Naval Forces Band. From his early days in the 1970s as a member of the influential Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in Chicago, through his pioneering work with electronic and computer music to his large body of notated and improvised music, teaching and writing George Lewis is one of the leading voices of modern composition. To close the evening the Norwegian Naval Forces Band will premiere a major new work commissioned from Lewis for the festival.

  Presented as part of the exhibition "The Latent City", curated by BEK Bergen Centre for Electronic Arts, taking place at Bergen Kjøtt and online. Edgelands (2019) starts from a series of field recordings from the suburbs and fringes of the city. These zones are critical as urban infrastructures, residential areas and for transport and industry. Still, they come across as bland, banal, and anonymous, haphazardly developed and aesthetically neglected. The suburban field recordings negate the dualism of nature and culture. Instead, insects, birds, wind and water cohabitate the sonic environment alongside footsteps, voices, dogs, traffic, trains and aeroplanes. The suburban soundscape is truly anthropocene and testifies to current political, societal, economic and environmental conditions. Edgelands make use of field recordings from Bergen, Stockholm, Stoke on Trent, Cape Town and Windhoek. Commissioned by NOTAM, Edgelands premiered at the Ultima festival in 2019.

  Speech by Michael Schwab, followed by a discussion with Schwab, Trond Lossius, Theo Barth, Dora Garcia, Apolonija Šušteršič. Hosted by Jørn Mortensen. Since the introduction of "artistic research" as an institutionalised concept both within the practice field and in the university and higher education sector (the academic field), there have been discussions about formats on the findings of the research. Few would argue that art and/or artistic practice is limited – both methodological or epistemological - as a domain for production of insights, erkentnis, experiences, and understanding of man's relation to her social, political, emotional and aesthetic surroundings. But since art operates within different institutionalised frameworks (as is the case with a wide range of practices (law, medicine, engineering etc.), art and artistic research are faced different expectations from different agents. This is of course old news and has been eloquently investigated by Henk Borgdorff in his book The Conflict of the Faculties (Leiden University Press 2012), where he investigates many of the "conflict lines" between artistic and academic practice. These investigations very often lead to elaborations within theory of science, and in particular; how epistemological investigations can help to understand how artistic practice can serve as explorative and investigating force. One of the challenges Borgdorff and his colleague in "Journal of Artistic Research" (JAR), Michael Schwab, has dealt with, is the nature of the outcome of research based artistic practice, and how it can meet standards both within artistic and academic field. (Standards within the academic field are expressed in the Frascati manual and include criteria like novelty, systematic, originality, transferability.) As part of the development of the peer-reviewed journal JAR, Schwab and Borgdorff proposed the concept of the exposition as an alternative to the academic essay/article: "An exposition is comparable with what articles are in traditional journals. It has a title, one or more authors, an abstract, a media file that can be used to represent the exposition and a set of closed-vocabulary metadata. As the name suggests, the purpose of an exposition is to 'expose' practice as research rather than simply document or refer to it." (M. Schwab: The SAGE Handbook for Dissertations and Theses. p. 346, Sage 2012) To meet the academic criteria listed above and to meet the standards of a practice field must involve some sort of translation. The Frascati manual actually says: "The codification of knowledge and its dissemination is part of the usual practice in universities and research institutes,.."(2.4 Transferability and/or reproducibility, 2.20) Codification is a condition for sharing. Recently Michael Schwab launched the anthology Transpositions: Aesthetico-Epistemic Operators in Artistic Research (Leuven University Press 2018). Transposition as musical concept represents a shift to a different key, to a different range, to something new but still with a clear reference to what you left. How can transpositional logic be of relevance for the format of the findings of artistic result? How do we – or shall we (?) – translate the findings of artistic research so that they both satisfy artistic standards and academic rigour?

  The Atmospherics is one of the ongoing collaborative projects of Trond Lossius and Jeremy Welsh. Through field recordings they capture unique qualities from different natural landscapes and urban areas. The recorded audio and video material is then filtered, edited, modified and mixed to highlight some characters or to mute others. The intention is not to document the sites, but rather to build a database of audiovisual material that is combined in different ways in their installations, where each assembly becomes a "temporary place", constructed of impulses from different geographical areas. Since 2014, the project has moved from Bergen, Trondheim, Arendal, Førde, Utne and Campania, Italy, where it has been presented in various installations with multi-screen video and multi-channel audio. The new video adapted to the cinema format, which premieres at Entrée, summarizes this entire project, and combines material from all the different phases and parts of the country.

  Unpacking an archive, evoking memory and loss, re-animating musical fragments; sound and installation artist Trond Lossius’ Å holde øyeblikket is a moving exploration of the archive and music of the late composer and educator Morten Eide Pedersen. Based on Pedersen’s compositions, and extracts, fragments and material further processed by Trond, the installation is a series of episodes each representing a state, a situation, a material or a picture, as a series of tones. Common to each sonic moment is that it is stretched and held tight before it slips away. As a close friend of Morten Eide Pedersen, Lossius has not only evoked his musical legacy, but his impact as a human being. Eide Pedersen encouraged those around him to hold on to the moment, not only in music but also as a presence in the world and in association with others. Å holde øyeblikket was first commissioned and presented by Borealis in 2017 as part of the minifestivalen GJENLYD. Supported by Arts Council Norway and City of Bergen.

  En gruppe kunstnere med en felles interesse for synsansens rolle i mennskelig erfaring og i samfunnet, leker seg i denne forestillingen med blindsonens kunstneriske potensiale og uklare omstendigheter. Blindhet er fravær av syn. Det kan oppleves som svart, eller det kan være ingenting. Den plutselige blindhet som oppstår når man skrur av lyset oppleves som svart. Ingenting er derimot manglende synsopplevelse, som verden bak ens eget hode. Kunst og media forholder seg overveiende til synssansen. Dette kan utfordres på mange måter av kunstnere som stiller spørsmål om begreper, politikk, religion og moral i samfunnet. Synet er målskive for et massivt bombardement av korte, problematiske, forvirrende og besværlige budskaper, som tilsammen danner et villniss eller en avgrunn.

  Fundamental to the development of musical or artistic creative work is the ability to transform raw materials. This ability implies the facility to master many facets of the material, and to shape it with plasticity. Computer music environments typically provide points of control to manipulate material by supplying parameters with controllable values. This capability to control the values of parameters is inadequate for many artistic endeavors, and does not reflect the analogous tools and methods of artists working with physical materials. Rather than viewing parameters in computer-based systems as single points of control, the authors posit that parameters must become more multifaceted and dynamic in order to serve the needs of artists. The authors propose an expanded notion of how to work with parameters in computer-centric environments for time-based art. A proposed partial solution to this problem is to give parameters additional properties that define their behavior. An example implementation of these ideas is presented in Jamoma.

  An approach for creating structured Open Sound Control (OSC) messages by separating the addressing of node values and node properties is suggested. This includes a method for querying values and properties. As a result, it is possible to address complex nodes as classes inside of more complex tree structures using an OSC namespace. This is particularly useful for creating flexible communication in modular systems. A prototype implementation is presented and discussed.
