B 29. Theoretical Perspectives on Professionalism and Teacher Education in Early Childhood (2PRLU20-28)

(Norsk tittel: Teoretiske perspektiver på barnehagelærerprofesjonalitet og barnehagelærerutdanning)

Practical information

The course will be organized as 3 half-day seminars with lectures and discussions. The two first seminars will be held digitally while the third seminar is a physical seminar held at Campus Hamar.

Participants who wish to earn ECTS credits will also be attending a fourth (digital) seminar (date to be agreed upon among participants) where they present and discuss their mandatory assignment. The final assessment is an essay (see course description). The essay can be written in English or a Scandinavian language.

There is no registration fee, but participants will have to pay for their travel and accommodation.

Content

Through this course, you will be exploring theoretical perspectives on teacher education and professionalism as they relate to early childhood education. We will be working with these theories to critically engage with the ways in which ideas about professionalism and teacher education take shape in policy, practice and more generally in public discourse – locally, nationally and internationally. The course invites you to deconstruct and problematise taken-for-granted ideas about what professionalism is, who does it, and why it matters in early childhood teacher education. The course will make use of a variety of methods that will draw upon students’ personal experiences in early childhood in relation to professional discourses and how these connect to broader, international debates and issues. Participants will have ample opportunity to apply insights from their own teaching contexts and/or their own PhD-projects to some of the perspectives explored.

Participation

This is a course at the PhD level, which means that it is primarily intended for those who are admitted to a PhD-programme. PhD candidates from programmes other than PROFF, may participate as single course (“enkeltemne”) students and earn ECTS credits as detailed above.

In the event that there are more applicants than spaces, candidates will be prioritized as follows:

  1. PhD candidates at PROFF
  2. Other PhD candidates at INN University
  3. PhD candidates from other institutions

Elective courses are offered on the condition that an adequate number of students have enrolled for the course. Where this is not possible, PROFF PhD candidates may be allowed to take an independent study reading course. Independent study reading courses are subject to the same syllabus and documentation requirements as other elective courses.
