B30. Classroom discourse and professional development (2PRLU20-29)

A doctoral level course offer by INN University’s PhD in teaching and teacher education (PROFF).

Practical information

The course will be organized as a 3-day (physical) seminar with lectures and discussions from Tuesday 20.6. to Thursday 22.6. There is no registration fee, but participants will have to pay for their travel and accommodation.

Participants who wish to earn ECTS credits will also be attending a digital seminar (date to be agreed upon among participants) where they present and discuss their mandatory assignment (discourse analysis). The final assessment is an essay (see course description).

Content

Through this course, you will be exploring models and frameworks of reflective practice as a professional development strategy. We will also be exploring some of the frameworks for the investigation of classroom discourse and apply them to authentic classroom discourse. The course broadens the notion of classroom discourse to include social interaction in teacher education context and we will be investigating various face-to-face and online modes in the Teacher Education Corpus (TEC) in contexts such as discussion groups, teaching practice and TP feedback, and research supervision meetings. In these contexts the course examines, for example, reflective practice and teacher identity and their role in professional development. Participants will have ample opportunity to apply insights from their own teaching contexts to some of the frameworks explored.

Participation

This is a course at the PhD level, which means that it is primarily intended for those who are admitted to a PhD-programme. The course is also open to other participants who fulfil the PhD programme admission requirements (a master's degree with an average grade of B). PhD candidates from programmes other than PROFF, or those who fulfil the PhD admission requirements, may participate as single course (“enkeltemne”) students and earn ECTS credits as detailed above.

The course is also open to other participants who wish to audit the course and contribute to the discussions.

In the event that there are more applicants than spaces, candidates will be prioritized as follows:

  1. PhD candidates at PROFF
  2. Other PhD candidates at INN University
  3. PhD candidates from other institutions
  4. Employees at INN University
  5. Employees from other institutions
