  Questions surrounding mobility and migration are often connected to matters of language, citizenship, socio-economic status and class that are inherently unequal between developed and less-developed nation states. Scholars of geography and demographics have conceptualized both internal and external/international migration with “push” and “pull” factors as salient reasons for mobility. Traditional causes of external migration and so-called “push factors” include conflict, natural disaster, economic collapse, war, and transformations of socio-political systems as well as more promising employment options and decent incomes as contributing factors to external migration (Gonçalves & Schluter, 2020, p. 3). Such “forced moves” affect largely disadvantaged populations that are at risk (i.e. asylum seekers, refugees, victims of human trafficking) (Castles, 2003). For individuals engaging in lifestyle migration and lifestyle mobilities and considered voluntary migration, their life circumstances are extremely different in that they are often equipped with “privileged preconditions” (Mancinelli, 2020, p. 419) as “nomads from affluence” (Cohen, 1973) including for the most part, education, specialized skills, high standards of living and favorable visa regimes of their home countries (primarily in the West). These factors facilitate a range of choices in terms of where they travel to (i.e. place), also known as network capital, the kind of work they engage in and the rate of their mobility. Based on years of ethnographic work, in this paper, we investigate the different dimensions and discourses of lifestyle migration and lifestyle mobilities, both of which we argue presents a new trajectory and venue to explore within the field of migration linguistics (Borlongan, 2023). By focusing on two different case studies within Norway, we also draw on the notion of mediational repertoires (Lexander & Androutsopolous, 2021) as part of the communicative ecology in which jobs are found and where communication takes place among different types of migrants and their new permanent or temporary homes.

  This paper investigates the co-construction of identities of inclusion and exclusion in digitally mediated migrant-host community interaction. Through both interview and digital interactional data, we look at the discursive social categorization of and by Lithuanian labour migrants and their majority population interlocutors and analyze the semiotic practices by which identity categories are talked and written into being in home-school collaboration and workplace interaction. To capture the negotiation of power, (in)equality and authority, we apply the concepts orders of indexicality (Blommaert, 2007), and adequation and distinction (Bucholtz & Hall 2005). Our analysis shows how participants draw on various semiotic resources to interactionally construct identities as included, such as media choice, punctuation, text composition and multimodality.

  Migrants from Senegal constitute a small minority in Norway, which complicates their pos-sibilities of carrying out certain linguistic and cultural practices face-to-face. However, with increased access to digital means, socio-cultural practices, including multilingual discourse, may be participated in transnationally. In this paper, we analyse two stretches of multimodal conversation between a Senegalese living in Norway and two interlocutors in Senegal, more specifically one WhatsApp conversation with a nephew, and one Messenger interaction with a close friend. Based on interview and interactional data, we investigate how they use their vari-ous communicative resources to negotiate transnational relationships, and to seek emotional, spiritual, and practical support. The analysis shows how language choice is used to create vir-tual togetherness (Baldassar 2008; Nedelcu and Wyss 2016) in different ways. The interlocutors engage in practices ranging from phatic communication, banter and gifting, to help with practi-cal issues and doing business as they manage different mobile chronotopes (Lyons and Tagg 2019). Our research extends the use of the mobile chronotope to include voice messages and considers more intimate relationships. It shines light on the immense resourcefulness of highly multilingual individuals in achieving their communicative aims and points this out as a fruitful area for future investigation.

  This paper investigates family multilingualism in a polymedia perspective, presenting results from a study of transnational communication among four families with Senegalese background, living in Norway. Ethnographic interview data collected in 2017 and 2018, including mediagrams, are analysed to get insight into the families’ uses of media and language. Furthermore, the moment-by-moment language practices through which family relationships are managed and sustained are examined through fine-grained analysis of interpersonal interaction. The paper thus both draws on and goes beyond polymedia to investigate how linguistic repertoires are developed in digital communication. The aim is to explore ways in which this theory may help us rethink family multilingualism as digital language practices become increasingly significant.

  Digital communication remains largely unexplored in sociolinguistic research on diaspora and language. In this paper, ethnographically collected data from Norway-based families of Senegalese heritage are explored to identify how family members use digital media to engage with diaspora concerns and projects, and how this engagement shapes their multilingual practices online. We re-contextualize the concept of polycentricity (Blommaert et al.) from the physical setting of a neighbourhood or region to complex ecologies of digital media, and identify four ‘centres’, that is, distinct orientations for participants’ digital language and literacy practices, in which linguistic choices are associated with diaspora discourses, genres, and imagery. Each centre constrains the deployment of linguistic and semiotic resources in ways that are related both to historically rooted sociolinguistic hierarchies and affordances of digital media. The findings support a key claim in language and diaspora research, that is, the fine-grained patterning of linguistic resources in diaspora communities. They also underscore the need to extend the empirical scope of a sociolinguistics of diaspora from co-present to mediated interaction, and to explore the interplay between the two.

  This paper contributes to the research on Norwegian as a second language through an analysis of its role in digital interaction in the family context. Second language learners’ ideas of language needs and wishes change with the use of new information and communication technology (Darvin & Norton 2015; Douglas Fir Group, 2016). Through digital interaction, migrants may stay in closer touch with family and friends in the country of origin, and they can also build networks in the country of residence and develop their language competence. How does this influence on the use of Norwegian in migrant families in Norway? In the analysis of interview data, interactional and observational data, the following questions are discussed: How is digital communication used to develop Norwegian language competence in the family? What are the relations between the family members’ perspectives on identity and their use of Norwegian? The aim is to understand what digital use of Norwegian can tell us about Norwegian as a second language in family communication.

  This book offers new insights into transnational family life in today’s digital age, exploring the media resources and language practices parents and children employ toward maintaining social relationships in digital interactions and constructing transnational family bonds and identities.   How do language practices in digital interaction at work and in the dialogue between parents and teachers affect work migrants’ experiences of inclusion and exclusion in the online/offline nexus? This question guides the research that this paper reports from, carried out with migrant workers and parents and their interlocutors (Thyness and Lexander 2023). The paper first focuses on the methodological challenge of collecting and analyzing data on online interaction to understand processes of inclusion, encompassing on- and offline practices. It thus draws on recent discussions of methodological implications of the increasingly blurred online/offline distinction (e.g. Bolander and Locher 2020). Second, with reference to work on the use of visual tools for researching linguistic repertoires (Busch 2016), it analyzes the use of mediagrams. Mediagrams are collaborative visualizations of the digital, linguistic and modal resources that participants mobilize in interaction with various interlocutors (Lexander and Androutsopoulos 2021), and in the project, participants came to use them in different ways that will be discussed here, for instance to narrate migrant trajectories with digital interaction as the starting point. Furthermore, mediagrams were brought into the classroom, in collaboration with teachers who wanted to use them to enhance their communication with migrant parents, leading to further methodological reflection.

  Research on multilingual families is increasingly interested in the connection between language use and media use, i.e. how families are constructed through multilingual language practices “in contexts of transmigration, social media and technology saturation, and hypermobility” (King and Lanza 2017: 2). Despite this interest, there is so far no substantial body of research on how interpersonal mediated communication affects family language policy and practices in transnational and transcultural families. This paper contributes to filling this gap through investigating the link between family multilingualism and polymedia (Madianou and Miller 2012), presenting results from a study of transnational communication among four families that originate in Senegal and live in Norway. The few earlier studies that have been carried out on digitally mediated interaction in the family show that the affordances of digital tools enable heritage language use among children in transnational families in complex ways (Cuban 2014) and that transnational family members develop media strategies to build relationships with heritage languages (Szecsi and Szilagyi 2012). Departing from a translanguaging perspective, this paper applies a practice-based approach to heritage language competence, in line what Canagarajah (2019) found to be the perspective of migrants from Sri Lanka: “the ability to align HL verbal resources strategically with multimodal semiotic resources and spatial repertoires to accomplish social and cultural communicative activities” (2019: 42). The focus in the article will be on communicative practices of one family, consisting of a mother born in Senegal and her four children, two of them born in Senegal and two of them born in Norway. The family makes use of a range of communicational tools and languages to communicate within themselves as well as with relatives and friends from different generations, in Norway, in Senegal and elsewhere in the world, creating a multilingual, multipurpose digital space. Ethnographic interview data collected in 2017 and 2018 are analysed to understand these languaging practices and fine-grained analysis of interpersonal interaction with nuclear and extended family members across a variety of digital media is also carried out. The aim is on the one hand to explore how their digital language practices may help us rethink family multilingualism: How are family relationships managed and sustained through these interactions and how are heritage language practices developed in digital communication? On the other hand, the paper discusses what the study of language use in individuals’ digital interaction may tell us about how the family members navigate the environment of affordances offered by the media they have access to, i.e. how the study of translanguaging in transnational family interaction may contribute to polymedia theory.   According to Vogue (2017) “no neighborhood better embodies Oslo’s coming-of-age than Grünerløkka, a neatly encapsulated couple of square blocks with a name that might scare off anglophones—it’s pronounced GROO-ner-loh-kuh—but with an attitude and energy that is reminiscent of New York’s Williamsburg or Bushwick, Montreal’s Mile End, or even Los Angeles’s Silver Lake”. In this paper, we investigate the changing linguistic and semiotic landscapes of Grünerløkka, Oslo’s (and possibly even Scandinavia’s) best known gentrified neighborhood. We focus on the linguistic and semiotic landscapes that have remained there within the last decade that index the multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual working-class area Grünerløkka once represented and compare them to the newer, more trendier linguistic and semiotic landscapes that index ‘authentic’ Norwegian culture and cuisine resonating cultural consumption and distinction (Zukin 1987; Stjernholm 2015; Trinch & Snajdr 2017) leading to the following research questions: How is the semiotic landscape used by different actors to argue for what they consider should be the “authentic” Grünerløkka? Secondly, how does the actual semiotic landscape translate the tensions that exist between different actors around questions of place, space and neighborhoods? And finally, how do processes of such new globalism(s) (Smith 2002) play out on an international level beyond the scope of Scandinavia? We employ a mixed methodological approach and draw on a) the “marketplace’s” (Kallen 2010) signage; b) interviews conducted with local residents and business owners; and c) texts from several online platforms. Our analysis attends to the ways in which Grünerløkka has managed to remain ethnically diverse, while simultaneously catering to a growing new gentry (Warf 2000; Gonçalves, fc, 2018) through the dialectical relationship between commercial interests and residents’ initiatives and resistance on a local level, which are also taking place in urban areas globally.
