Petroleum production on the Norwegian continental shelf has made Norway a major player of strategic importance in energy markets. Particularly significant is Norway’s role in European markets for natural gas. This brings strong attention from other countries. Russia's war against Ukraine has actualized and made clear Norway's special position among Western countries as a major energy exporter.
The Norwegian state and energy companies have made significant revenues partly triggered by the war. At the same time, fluctuating and occasionally high electricity prices affect Norway and its energy preparedness domestically. Market changes and market integration, energy crisis and international conflict put unprecedented pressure on Norwegian energy policy in particular, and Norwegian politics in general. Simultaneous pressures on domestic, foreign and security policy play out on a scale and strength not previously experienced.
The project will map changes in the geopolitics of energy with an emphasis on foreign and security policy implications for Norway.
The project is financed by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence.
