Christer Thrane er sosiolog (dr. polit.) fra Universitetet i Oslo og har arbeidet ved Høgskolen i Lillehammer (senere Innlandet) siden 1993. Han ble professor i 2005. Utover bidrag i typiske sosiologiske tidsskrifter, har hans statistisk baserte forskning på sport, fritid og rekreasjon i hovedsak ligget i skjæringsflaten mellom sosiologi, økonomi og konsumentatferd. Thrane har i lærerrollen vært spesielt opptatt av å gjøre kvantitativ metode tilgjengelig for andre enn de som allerede kan dette, noe som har resultert i en rekke kronikker, lærebøker og annen formidling om statistisk analyse.
