Espen Stranger-Johannessen er førsteamanuensis ved INN, med ph.d. i Literacy Education fra University of British Columbia, Canada. Ph.d.-forskningen hans fokuserte på læreridentitet og African Storybook, en nettside med afrikanske historier (africanstorybook.org). Basert på dette arbeidet utviklet han og medarbeidere nettsider for flere land med fortellinger på mange språk, inkludert de norske versjonene Barnebøker for Norge (barneboker.no) og LIDA fortellinger (lidastories.net/norge). Øvrige forskningsområder inkluderer flerspråklighet, læreridentitet, lærebøker, internasjonal utvikling, virtuell virkelighet (VR) og biblioteker, alt i forbindelse med utdanning.
